Great Central Railway 17/03/2013

After a discounted breakfast service available to early arrivals, 82 participants enjoyed an extremely comprehensive exploration of the infrastructure of the Great Central Railway by 3-car Class 101 DMU (50266+50321+51427). Starting at Loughborough Central platform 1, our charter proceeded to Quorn & Woodhouse where the sidings either side of the signalbox and turntable road were completed. Proceeding to Swithland, we traversed the Up loop and completed the track to the end of the headshunt before reversal and continuing forward to Rothley, where the approach to the carriage sidings was completed as far as the three-way point. Subsequently at Leicester North we covered both roads to the end of the line and traversed the run-round loop in full. On the return, the Down siding at Rothley was completed as far as stored stock, being an "on the day" bonus due to prompt running. Running through the Down loop at Swithland, we returned to Loughborough, avoiding platform 2 by running through the Down loop, reaching parallel with the signalbox adjacent to the loco shed. The second road to the loco shed was then traversed after a reversal in platform 1. Heading back past the station, the Up station loop was partially completed from the "Quorn" end, reversing underneath the road overbridge, before terminating in South Carriage Sidings No 1 road after a double reversal. With special arrangements, participants were then able to benefit from a reduced cost return journey from Loughborough Central to Quorn & Woodhouse, enjoying a ride behind GWR King 6023 "King Edward II" on the outbound journey and ex-BR Class 27 27056 on the return, which completed the crossover into platform 1 at Loughborough. Thanks are due to all involved at the Great Central Railway who provided an exemplary service, Bert Ellery for the souvenir tickets, Peter Scott for his excellent track map and Steve Best from www.uklocos.com for permission to supply his stocklist. The Society will be delighted to re-visit the GCR when other sought after attractions become available for passenger use.

Conkers, Moira 17/03/2013

30 participants then proceeded to the 2 foot gauge dumbbell layout minor railway at “Conkers” in the heart of the National Forest, to enjoy a ride behind steam outline Severn Lamb 8204 4w-4wDH (2011) “Conkachoo Two” hauling three covered “toast rack” bogie coaches.  Multiple trips were provided to ensure overlap, with the “on the day bonus” of a reversal of the service on to the stock storage siding near Discovery Centre enjoyed by many members.  The friendly railway staff were able to provide the opportunity to photograph the train including the less frequently used “Conkachoo” locomotive, which typically appears as an additional resource for seasonal events such as Santa specials.

Abbey Pumping Station, Leicester17/03/2013

Sadly, the third fixture of the day at Markeaton Park, Derby was cancelled due to locomotive failure and a re-run date will be scheduled in due course.  However, last minute arrangements were made to secure an “unusual lines” visit to the Abbey Pumping Station 2 foot gauge railway in Leicester, split into two groups.  This was the original “third fixture” for the 17th March, but excluded when it appeared volunteer cover may not have been adequate.  Thankfully, this turned out not to be the case!  Now that an operating mode has been established, a repeat visit will be scheduled in the future.  The 30 participants that attended travelled in two open wagons and a semi open coach behind ex Severn Water Simplex 40SD515 4wDM (1979) along the usual running line from Corporation Road to Foxes Den Loop, but with the addition of traversal of both run-round loops and “end of line” at Corporation Road.  The coaching stock shed road was also completed to the shed doors.  After transferring to a 4 wheel open plank wagon, members were able to travel in small party groups over the lines of the original railway including the steaming bay, the depot road, part of the run-round loop and the connection to the “mainline”.  Finally, participants were invited to visit the locomotive shed and record four other locomotives on site.
